ZESCO UPDATES ON LUSAKA TRANSMISSION

Zesco Limited says the Lusaka Transmission, Distribution and Rehabilitation Project whose works has resulted in some power loss, has now reached 95 percent completion stage.

ZESCO Senior Corporate Affairs Manager John Kunda says the power outages that are being experienced while this project is being undertaken should NOT however be construed to be load shedding.

Dr. Kunda says power is being cut to ensure the works on the project are safely done as the project is about upgrading already existing power sub-stations connected to the national electricity grid.

He says Zambia still remains power secure as ZESCO is currently producing around 2-thousand 6-hundred and 57 megawatts of power against the national demand of 2-thousand 4-hundred and 10 megawatts.

Dr. Kunda has told ZNBC news that the Country’s installed power generation capacity currently stands at 3-thousand 6-hundred 44 megawatts.

He however said ZESCO anticipates realizing Zambia’s vision of becoming a hub of electricity in the region much earlier than the set 2025 deadline through increased generation capacity.

Dr. Kunda said the Country is already benefiting from its present ability to generate excess power through its inter-linked trade avenues within the Southern African Power Pool.

He says with this power pool, which enables Zesco to sell power within the region, the power utility company is able to reserve revenue to again buy power at a time when there is a deficit in the Country.
