ZESCO to consider power importation – MAPANI

By Joshua Jere

ZESCO will consider importing power to cushion the expected load-shedding that has been necessitated by the drought.

Managing Director, VICTOR MAPANI says the power that will be imported may not completely address the load-shedding because it is expensive.

He says the government could step in and help pay the expensive power but notes that proper communication will be made on how this will be done.

Mr. MAPANI said this in an interview with journalists following a Power Supply Agreement with Zambia Sugar.

Meanwhile Mr. MAPANI said ZESCO cannot afford to cut down on exports of power because the revenue generated from it consists about 40 percent of the income it makes.

And Zambia Sugar Managing Director, OSWARD MAGWENZI said the company will in the next three years be generating 100 Megawatts of power.

Mr. MAGWENZI said the company currently produces 40 megawatts but plans to increase this to 100 in the next three years.

He said the excess power generated at Zambia Sugar will in future be sold to ZESCO.

The power supply agreement signed between ZESCO and Zambia Sugar assures Mazabuka’s biggest industry of power supply from ZESCO.
