Zambia Super League: Contenders and pretenders

TITLE FAVOURITES -ZESCO UNITED

Team ya Ziko are brilliant in every department and their squad is ludicrous, the players that will succumb to seating on the bench at Zesco would walk straight into the starting lineup for most super league sides.

Zesco United will be the favorites to win the league, they are the current champions. One would say young players did the business for them last season and the same young players have now grown in confidence and have gained experience.

They have added experience to their team in every department, in the goalkeeping department they have added national team goalkeeper Gregory Sanjase, In defense, they have replaced Marcel Kalonda with the South Sudan captain, Peter Maker Manyang, In midfield, Dickson Chapa has joined on loan and the ZamFoot Crew understands Spencer Sautu will also join on loan.

Upfront Edward Lungu who was a menace for defenders in the MTN Super League last season while at Kitwe United has also joined the Ndola-based outfit.

The Zesco United team has depth and quality not just quantity and that’s why it gives confidence that they will compete on the continent and the local scene.

They have a lot of players with experience and as well as hungry youth players, their preparations were spot on they are definitely one of the most organized teams in Southern African football.

TITLE CONTENDERS -ZANACO

The bankers are one of the favorites to contend for the league title, they have invested heavily in player recruitment; they have both quality and quantity in players, Zanaco has created a squad that should win in any competition they play in- including CAF Competitions.

The Bankers have a new gaffer in charge in Kelvin Kaindu, they started last season like a house on fire but lost it along the way which led to the management sending Chris Kaunda on administrative leave.

They have to compete on the continental front and local league; they have brought back Salulani Phiri, Taonga, brought in a lot of players like Eric Owusu, Isaac Shamujompa, Ackim Mumba among others to help bring the cup back at Sunset Stadium.

OUTSIDERS- GREEN BUFFALOES

The army side is outsiders to win the league, based on the way they finished strongly last season and they haven’t made a lot of changes to the team they have kept faith in most of the players, if GBFC improves on their defensive side of the game in the upcoming season, they should be up there at the end of the season.

Friday Samu has what it takes to be one of the top scorers in the league and showed that last season. With the support of players like Golden Mashata, Siame, Youremember Banda, Jack Chirwa, and Leonard Mulenga they have a strong team going forward with the potential to hurt a lot of defenses.

DARK HORSES: LUSAKA DYNAMOS

Arguably the most unlikely team of those spoken about to win the league, Lusaka Dynamos are dark horses, they won the ABSA cup last season they finished just outside the top four, man for man the current Lusaka dynamos side is better than most super league sides

The addition of David obash and Tshite Mweshi to their current squad will add more firepower up front with Collins sikombe looking to rediscover his form alongside Emmanuel Chabula.

The magnificent Marvin ‘The marvel’ Jere will again play an important role in their season.

The 2021/2022 Super League season kicks off on 11th September and is expected to be full of fireworks and it can’t be a Zambian football season without the drama of course.
