Government is this year targeting to empower about 2,000 youths countrywide under the Youth in Transport empowerment scheme.

And 120 youths across all the 16 Districts in Eastern Province have received motorbikes under the same scheme.

Launching the program, Youth, Sport and Arts Minister ELVIS NKANDU said the empowerment targets the youths who have interest in the transport business.

Mr. NKANDU says the scheme which has been piloted in Eastern Province will be rolled out to other Provinces countrywide.

He says government through his ministry is working to reduce youth unemployment using empowerment schemes.

Mr. NKANDU urged the beneficiaries to take care of the motor bikes as it is a loan which they are expected to pay back after a given period.

He says motorcycles have proven to be the cheap mode of transport for people in the Province.

Speaking earlier, Eastern Province Minister PETER PHIRI implored beneficiaries to prioritize safety on the road.
