The Zambia U-20 Women’s national team humiliated Malawi 6-0 to put one foot into the third round of the U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022 Qualifiers.

Coach Charles Haalubono named a strong starting lineup with Luyando Foundation Girls star Evarine Susan Katongo captaining the side in a free role behind lone striker Eneless Phiri while Tisilile Lungu and Loveness Malunga partnered in midfield with Salome Phiri and Xiomala Mapepa on either wing.

The Young Copper Queens started strong coming close in the early minute but finally got their break in the 13th minute as Eneless scored from close range after a beautiful pass from the skipper.

Eneless was on target again in the 25th minute this time finishing off a Salome Phiri assist. Eneless and Evarine Susan Katongo combined again minutes later as the former set up the latter for a third goal for the Young Queens.

The second half was more of the same as Xiomala Mapepa headed in from close range just four minutes onto the second stanza. Eneless Phiri completed her hat-trick in the 68th minute beating Shabel Bengo in the Malawi goal from the penalty spot after Xiomala Mapepa was brought down in the box.

Second-half substitute Lungowe Namasiku completed the thrashing of the young scorchers as she netted from close range off a Katongo assist.

The Young Copper Queens now carry a comfortable 6-0 aggregate going into the return match on October 9, 2021, at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The winner over the two legs will face Ghana in the next round of qualifiers after Mauritania pulled out of the race to Costa Rica.
