Women’s National League back with a bang…As Buffaloes edge Elite Ladies and Arrows share spoils with YASA

The Inaugural 2020/21 FAZ Women’s Super League got back to action today after a months break and picked up from where the teams left off with a total of 10 goals recorded in two mouthwatering encounters in Rescheduled week 9 fixtures played this morning.

Lusaka Dynamos Ladies 0-2 Green Buffaloes (Theresa Chewe, Ethel Chama)

At NASDEC Sports Complex, Lusaka Dynamos Ladies Football Club played host to Green Buffaloes Women Football Club and it was the Zambia Army-sponsored outfit who won bragging rights as they managed a 2-nil win over the Elite Ladies with a goal in each half from Theresa Chewe and Ethel Chama.

Both sides started on a good note in this cagey affair and it was Buffaloe’s top goal scorer Theresa Chewe who stole the party just after the 10th-minute mark with a long-range goal that left Chimwemwe Mwale in goal for Dynamos with absolutely no chance.

Dynamos were forced to make an early change before the break after Margaret ‘Bauleni’ Mulenga could not continue as she picked up a hand injury and her place was taken up by Ruth Ndala who had a decent game since her introduction.

After the break, the match continued from where it ended in the first half with both teams testing each other in a match that was characterized by aerial balls especially that the pitch was slippery thereby making it difficult for teams to play the ball on the ground.

Dynamos’ first glorious opportunity fell to the dangerous woman Grace ‘Njonginjo’ Tembo but her effort was well saved by Aisha Mbwana Kwaya in goal for Buffaloes.

Maylan Mulenga who returned to action after missing for some months as she was away for military training almost extended the lead for Buffaloes with a long-range shot outside the 18-yard box which went wide with only a few inches from the goalmouth.

Dynamos made another change as they withdrew Grace Tembo for Eunice Namfukwe who almost made a mark but she failed to connect with a well taken free-kick from Xiomara Mapepa whose effort almost found the back of the net.

Elizabeth Mupeso had another opportunity to restore parity but her free-kick just inside the danger zone went off target for the Elite Ladies and immediately after this chance the pendulum swang against Dynamos as Thandiwe Nkhata was unfortunate to have tripped Lubasi just on the edge of the box and a free-kick was awarded in favor of Buffaloes.

Captain of the side Joana Benaya stepped up and took the set-piece which Chimwemwe Mwale failed to deal with as she parried the ball and Ethel Chama slotted home the second goal from a rebound making it 2-0 to Buffaloes with less than 2 minutes to full-time.

A few minutes later, Buffaloes captain Benaya was sent off with a red card after a dangerous challenge on Thandiwe Nkhata who even failed to continue with play and she was replaced by Chikondi Phiri in the closing stages of the match.

After all, was done and dusted with both sides having an equal share of opportunities, it was a sweet away victory for the Coach Charles Haalubono drilled lasses via a 2-0 scoreline against the Coach Grace Mwaango tutored ladies.

Green Buffaloes will welcome Zambia Institute for Sustainable Development (ZISD) Women Football Club on Wednesday at Green Square in Arakan in a rescheduled catch-up match week 10.

Red Arrows 4-4 YASA Queens (Grace Chanda x2, Mary Mambwe Ochumba Lubanje Oseke, | Florence Kasonde x3, Melissa Mataba)

Elsewhere at Nkoloma Stadium, Red Arrows Women Football Club and YASA Queens shared spoils in an eight-goal thriller.

Grace Chanda scored a brace for the Air Ladies with the other goals coming from Mary Mambwe and Ochumba Lubanje Oseke while Florence Kasonde scored a hattrick with Melissa Mataba scoring the other for the Stubborn YASA as the match ended 4-4 in this thrilling encounter.

Arrows’ next assignment is in mid-week as they are expected to take a long trip to the friendly city of Ndola against ZESCO Ndola Girls in a rescheduled catch-up week 10 fixture.
