WEATHER PHONE APP LAUNCHED

By Mary Mwiinga:The University of Zambia, in partnership with Makerere University of Uganda, has launched a farmer weather phone application called Cropwis that predicts weather forest of up to 16 days for specific location.The application predicts weather forecasts in real time.University of Zambia -UNZA- Vice Chancellor Luke Mumba says the application is meant for fast paced agricultural production decisions for farmers in the face of climate change.Professor Mumba says the development of the application is a timely achievement because it will help farmers decide when to plant their crops.He praised the school of agriculture for the research efforts and urged them to enhanced efforts to help the sector because the country has prioritised agriculture development.Professor Mumba said this in a speech read on his behalf by University of Zambia Director of Research and Graduate studies Professor Henry Sichingabuladuring the launch of the application in Lusaka.Meanwhile, Makerere University Reaserch Scientist John Wasige said the application is 90 per cent accurate.Dr. Wasige said the Cropwis application will be useful especially with projected frequent drought, high viability, and reduced rainfall in Africa.He said in order to tackle climate change it is important to change the way things are done by providing more information.
