Two Zambian Super League stars make Zimbabwe squad for AFCON

The Zambia national team may not be going to the Africa Cup of Nations but two players from the Zambia Super League will be in Cameroon.

13-time Champions, Nkana defender Gilroy Chimwemwe who has been impressive for the Wusakile based outfit has been named in Zimbabwe’s final 23-man squad for the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations that gets underway on 9th January 2021.

The other player who has made the cut is Zesco United midfielder Thabani Kamusoko. Coach Norman Mapeza will be without a number of his leading players due to injury and abrupt international retirement for the continental showpiece.

Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, Tawanda Maswanhise of Leicester City, Reims midfielder Marshal Munetsi and Wigan Athletics’ Tendayi Darikwa will all miss the tournament through injury.

Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Biliat announced last month that he had retired from international football but Mapenza was hoping to change his mind which he failed to do.

Zimbabwe open their Group B campaign against Senegal on Jan. 10 and will also face Malawi and Guinea in their pool.

The team departed for Cameroon earlier today and are currently making a stop over in Addis Ababa before continuing to Cameroon tomorrow.
