Two nabbed over Army recruitment scam

The Zambia Army Military Police, with the assistance of Commandos in Mbala, have nabbed a 19-year-old man for impersonation and incitement.

While impersonating Chief CHITANDA LUMAMBA, the suspect, only identified as COSTERN CHISOWA, called the desperate job seekers on his mobile phone on dates between August 11 and 22, 2023, claiming that he had secured them spaces in the Zambia Army Commando Unit at a fee and that they should report to the Outward Bound Training School in the Northern District.

Special Forces Group Deputy Commander, Colonel DOWSON KIPOMPWE, says the imposter allegedly told the job applicants that they had been recruited by the Army Commander since he was in frequent contact with him, when in fact not.

“When he realised that the job seekers were not being allowed to get inside the training school, he began inciting them to protest and creating videos that the Army was chasing candidates when in fact not,” Col KIPOMPWE explained.

Col KIPOMPWE also stated that the Army will not tolerate anyone who brings its name into disrepute and will not fall for tricks of agreeing to train people who are unfit for the job.

CHISOWA was reported to the Commando authority by some of the stranded protesters after overhearing him making phone calls claiming to be a chief.

At this point, the unit with the help of military police arrived and captured him.

He has since had his phone seized for investigation purposes by the military police and is currently awaiting further disciplinary action through the due process of the law.

In another event, a woman has been apprehended for transporting job seekers in Rosa minibuses to various recruitment centres across the country under the pretext of securing them spaces in the ongoing training exercise.

The woman, whose identity has been withheld for investigation reasons, ferried the youths to the centres in ten buses after they paid her money.

She kept them stranded, leading to protests against non-entry into the centres.

The woman has since been caught and handed over to the military police at Army Headquarters.

Zambia Army Spokesperson, MARTIN LIYUNGU, has said the Army will not allow corrupt individuals to interfere in the training process and has warned the public to desist from involving the defence wing in corruption activities, which not only tarnishes its reputation but also attracts a heavy fine.
