TREE SUFFERS ABUSE BY PEOPLE SEEKING LOVE

By Moombe Hamoobola

Some residents of Livingstone have continued ripping apart small branches of a tree that is in the acacia family in a bid to find out if their partner or would-be partner is in love with them.

This is a tradition that has been practiced for a long time in some part
of the country.

A check by a ZNBC News crew in Mwandi township found that almost all the acacia shrubs in the area have had some of their branches ripped off by people allegedly in search of love.

JOSEPH SIMAKKOBELA, a resident of Livingstone, has told ZNBC News that many people in the district use the particular tree to find out if their partners are in love with them or not.

Mr. SIMAKKOBELA explains that one has to hold two sides of a branch and rip it apart slowly and that if it does not cut off, it means your partner loves you, but if it cuts off, it means they don’t.

But Livingstone based conservationist BENJAMIN MIBENGE has advised residents of Livingstone to leave the tree alone.

Mr. MIBENGE says while it’s true that roots, or leaves of certain trees can be used for medicine for illnesses such as cough or headache, trees cannot determine one’s love fate.
