“THERE WILL BE NO LAW AGAINST NATIONAL VALUES”

By Mary Kachepa

Government says it has no plans to introduce laws that are harmful to national values and principles.

Chief government spokesperson CHUSHI KASANDA says the process to amend the penal code and the criminal procedure code started in 2011 following an outcry from stakeholders in the criminal justice system.

Ms KASANDA says the stakeholders observed that some laws were outdated and did not reflect contemporary times.

She explains that the process has not been started by the UPND government as insinuated by some sections of society saying it has been ongoing for the past 11 years.

Ms KASANDA told ZNBC News that the technical committee appointed to propose amendments to the penal code and the criminal procedure code recommended that the offence of bigamy be repealed from the penal code to avoid duplicity of offences.

She further said that if the offense of bigamy is repealed under the penal code it will still remain an offence under the marriage act.

Ms KASANDA who is also information and Media Minister has assured Zambians that government will not depart from the Christian principles as enshrined in the Republican constitution.

She said government has no intentions to legalize homosexuality and the constitution is clear and the matter is outlawed in Zambia.

Ms KASANDA has advised members of the public to take keen interest and familiarize themselves with the proposals by the Zambia Law Development Commission to amend some provisions in the penal code so that they debate from an informed position
