technology gaps cause for low maize yields-Corteva

Brian Mwale-Corteva Agriscience has observed that failure to adopt latest technology and good farming practices among small holder farmers has led to low maize yield.

Corteva Agriscience Managing Director SAMSON NYENDWA says maize yields among smallholder farmers have remained low around 1.8-metric tons despite a 10-metric ton yield potential.

He says commercial farmers in the country using the same seed get about 8-metric tons or more per hectare because of using good farming practices and latest techonloy.

Mr. NYENDWA says Zambia has the latest farming technologies but it however does not reach smallholder farmers.

Speaking during an end of year media interaction organized by his company in Lusaka ,Mr. NYENDWA called on the media in the country to help raise awareness of good farming practices and technology.

He said the media have the potential to influence best agriculture practices and change the narrative.

Mr. NYENDWA also noted that Zambia has made strides in the agriculture sector with about 85-percent of families in the country being supported by the sector.
