TANZANIA TO IMPORT 1 MILLION TONNES OF SOYA BEANS

By Michael Kaumba-

The Tanzanian government says it is ready to import up to one million tonnes of soya beans annually from Zambia.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to Zambia HASSAN SIMBA-YAHYA says his country has a huge market for soya beans and is looking to import the produce from Zambia.

Mr SIMBA-YAHYA says Tanzania can easily take up the 100,000 metric tonnes soya bean which has been earmarked for export by the Zambia National Farmers Union and other stakeholders.

Speaking with ZNBC News, Mr. SIMBA-YAHYA has urged local farmers to expand their soya beans production capacity and earn foreign exchange by exporting the crop to his country.

He said Tanzania used to export soya beans and maize to Zambia in the past but the two countries have reversed roles with his country now becoming an importer of the two crops.

Mr SIMBA-YAHYA also disclosed that his country is willing to learn from Zambia’s best agricultural practices in increasing soya beans and maize production.

The Zambia National Farmers Union and stakeholders announced recently that the country has an excess of 100,000 metric tonnes of soya produce for export this year.
