SWINE FEVER,FMD MAJOR THREAT TO LIVESTOCK

The 2022 Livestock Survey has revealed that diseases have continued to be the major threat to the livestock sector.

The survey which was conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with the Zambia Statistic Agency -ZAMSTATS-, notes that diseases such as Swine Fever, Foot and Mouth are the major diseases farmers across the country are facing, with Southern and
Copperbelt Provinces topping the list .

And Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, MAKOZO CHIKOTE who launched the report has called for concerted efforts in combating diseases and other factors affecting the livestock sector.

Mr. CHIKOTE said there is need to set up interventions for disease control and other factors affecting the sector in order to promote its productivity.

The Minister further encouraged the annual conducting of surveys in the sector to ensure evidence based and effective service delivery.

He said surveys are critical for the development of the sector and enhancement of it’s contribution towards the Gross Domestic Product -GDP.

Meanwhile, ZAMSTATS Interim Statistician General, MULENGA MUSEPA urged policy makers to take interest in results from surveys conducted in various ministries for the benefit of the country.

Mr. MULENGA noted that there is a gap between dissemination and critical use of the information obtained from surveys and researches.
