SPEAKER’S RULING SHOCKS MUNDUBILE

BY MARK ZILIGONE

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament BRIAN MUNDUBILE has described as shocking the ruling by Speaker of the National Assembly NELLY MUTTI.

Ms MUTTI ruled that MPs whose elections where nullified by High Court have NO right to attend parliamentary seating before the matter is determined by the Constitutional Court.

Mr. MUNDUBILE says the ruling has come as a shock because the Speaker has NO powers to make such a determination, when the affected MP has appealed to the Constitutional court.

He told journalists at a press briefing that it is only the constitutional court that has the jurisdiction to make final determination after the MPs’ appeal.

Mr. MUNDUBILE said before the final ruling by the constitutional courts, an MP still remains an elected law maker to represent his or her constituency.

He also called on the judiciary to further intervene in the matter and provide guidance.
