Southerners are not tribal

Map voter registerDear editor,

The Southern Province has been accused as the most ‘tribal’ but facts show that it is the least.FACTS DO NOT LIE

The Electoral Commission of Zambia website shows the results of the 2011 presidential election.

1. Southern Province gave Rupiah Banda 71, 519 votes while Eastern Province gave HH 10, 704

2. Southern Province gave Sata 24, 609 votes while Northern Province gave HH 2, 935

3. Southern Province gave Sata 24, 609 votes while Luapula Province gave HH 1, 758 votes

Eastern Province gave Rupiah a total of 233, 528 votes, Southern Province gave HH a total of 2, 66, 754 votes, Northern Province gave Sata a total of 242, 455 votes and Luapula Province gave Sata a total of 151, 822 votes

Based on the above data, you can calculate that:
1. A presidential candidate from the Eastern Province is likely to receive 26% support from Tongas in Southern Province while a Tonga candidate would receive 4.5% support from Eastern Province.

2. A Bemba candidate from Northern Province is likely to receive 9.2% support from Tongas in Southern Province while a Tonga candidate is likely to receive 1.2% backing from Bembas in Northern Province.

3. Results from Luapula indicate that a Bemba candidate is likely to receive a 9.2% backing from Southern Province while a Tonga candidate is likely to receive 1.1% backing from Luapula Province.

Making Southern Province the subject, Luapula is the most “tribal” followed by Northern and Eastern provinces in that order. Southern is the least “tribal.”
