Some mentally challenged patients are being abused – MWAMBA

Community Development and Social Services Minister DOREEN MWAMBA says her office has received reports that some stakeholders charged with the responsibility of taking care of mentally challenged patients are abusing them.

Ms. MWAMBA has warned that the trend will NOT be allowed and that anyone found exploiting mentally challenged patients will face the law.

She has cited mental illness and psycho social disability as one of the major silent killers in society.

The Minister says this is because many people stigmatize issues related to mental illness and victims fail to seek help.

Ms. MWAMBA was speaking when she visited Chainama Hospital, where a cleaning exercise of two wards was conducted.
