“SOME CIVIL SERVANTS NEED LIFESTYLE AUDIT”

By Masauso Mkwayaya

Chapter One Foundation has called for Civil Servants who handle public funds to be subjected to lifestyle audits and declaration of assets and liabilities in order to strengthen accountability.

Foundation Executive Director LINDA KASONDE says current legislation does not require Civil Servants to declare their assets even though they handle huge sums of public money.

Ms. KASONDE says the current scandal at the Ministry of Finance involving the alleged theft of 500 million Kwacha by some Civil Servants is a perfect example that calls for public service declarations among some Civil Servants.

She says theft of public funds disadvantages the poor and increases poverty levels in the country.

Ms. KASONDE said this at a Press Briefing in Lusaka where she unveiled a study sanctioned by her organization on ways to strengthen legislation on public service declarations to enhance accountability and promote transparency.

She stated that the study will also interrogate ways to ensure Ministers ,the Speaker of the National Assembly, and other public officers declare their assets and liabilities annually as required by the Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct Act.
