SMALL SCALE MINERS ASK FOR EXTENSION

BY PATRICIA BANDA

Some small scale miners who have not paid license fees for their mining activities have appealed to Government not to revoke their licences

Federation of Small Scale Miners President JOSEPH MWEWA has however requested government to consider giving them five months to settle their financial obligations.

Mr. MWEWA says most of the miners have had financial challenges due to the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic.

He says most of his members have not paid for one year because they are still struggling with operational costs.

Mr. MWEWA has told ZNBC news in an interview an extension to pay for their license fees would be a relief for his members.

On Monday this week, mining Cadastre Department Director SAMUEL MAANGO announced that Government has identified defaulters and will be issued with default notices to respond within 30days.

The affected mining rights holders have been defaulting for over three years with non-payment of annual fees, while others do not use proper machinery in their mining activities.
