Small holder farmers not practicing sustainable agriculture

The Climate Smart Agriculture Alliance is concerned that out of the 1. 8 million small holder farmers in Zambia, only about 200,000 are practicing sustainable agriculture.

National Coordinator ABEL MUSUMALI has called on government to prioritize sustainable agriculture packages as the sector transitions to comprehensive agriculture in order to enhance productivity, soil building and environmental protection.

Mr. MUSUMALI was speaking during a climate smart agriculture policy review and advocacy workshop which was convened to interrogate existing policies.

Speaking at the same event, KAZA ARISE AND FOOD SYSTEMS PROJECT MANAGER, AGNES CHINYAMA, encouraged communities to adopt climate smart agriculture in order to create resilience to the impact of climate change on the agriculture sector.

Meanwhile, Green Living Movement Chairperson KAMPASA TEMBO said with the growth in Zambia’s population, it is important to adopt the right agriculture practices in order to meet the growing demand for food in a sustainable way.
