Eastern Province minister Peter Phiri has called on learning institutions to develop a culture that encourages planting of trees.

Mr Phiri says government is aware of the global threats caused by climate change.

He says one way of protecting the planet against environmental degradation is by planting trees especially in areas where they have been depleted.

Mr Phiri said this in a speech read for him by provincial chief human resources development officer George Machayi during the launch of a Green Mindset Initiative under the theme ‘Plant a tree and serve the earth at Chipata College of Education.

And College principal Tresphord Musakanya says the institution has embarked on the initiative so that students are aware about the environment and impact it in a positive way.

Mr Musakanya says each first year student will plant a tree and take care of it until they graduate.

The college is expected to plant over 500 trees this year.
