ROAD TO MOROCCO: Zambia drawn in group B alongside Cameroon

The Zambia Women’s National team has been drawn in group B for the 2022 Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON).

The Copper Queens have been drawn alongside giants Cameroon, North African side, Tunisia and Togo.

This follows the draw held on Friday evening in Rabat by CAF Competitions Director Samson Adamu with the help Moroccan Nawal El Moutawakel and Cameroonian Ajara Njoya.

Zambia squeezed past COSAFA rivals Malawi 4-3 on aggregate to reach the second round stage.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic campaigners went on to edge another COSAFA neighbour Namibia on away goals rule to clinch their second consecutive and third qualification ticket after a 1-1 draw on aggregate.

Hosts Morocco have been drawn with Senegal, Uganda and Burkina Faso. Morocco will kick off the tournament against Burkina Faso on July 02, 2022 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat. The match will kick off at 21:00 GMT.

Defending Champions, Nigeria have been drawn alongside South Africa, Burundi and Botswana.

The tournament will feature 12 teams for the first time (compared to 8 teams in previous tournaments) competing at the tournament which was supposed to be played last year but postponed to 2-23 July 2023 owing to the outbreak of Covid-19.

The 2022 Morocco Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will take place between 2nd and 23rd July, 2022.

The top 4 teams will qualify to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
