BY RUTH CHAYINDA

Presidential Covid-19 Advisor ROMA CHILENGI says the restrictions recently announced by the Ministry of Health are appropriate for the country to manage the spread of the Coronavirus.

Dr. CHILENGI says the measures put in place by Government are aimed at preventing the country from considering a lock down.

He has since urged the public to comply with the guidelines while encouraging citizens to consider getting the vaccines for the country to attain herd immunity.

Dr. CHILENGI has also expressed optimism that the country will vaccinate 2 million people by the end of this month because Government has ramped up the vaccination campaign in various districts.

He says the fourth wave of the pandemic is upon the country and the public should comply with the guidelines to avoid loss of lives as was witnessed during the third wave.

Dr. CHILENGI said this during the tourism industry vaccination drive in Lusaka.

And Tourism Minister RODNEY SIKUMBA who flagged off the tourism industry vaccination drive said his ministry will constantly engage stakeholders with regard to the restrictions being announced in line with managing the Covid-19.

Mr. SIKUMBA said the vaccination drive will be rolled out to various destinations so that more people have access to the vaccine.

He said it is important for the tourism sector to take the lead with vaccinations because they are the ones who interact with customers.

And Tourism Council of Zambia Chairperson VINCENT MUPWAYA said about 80 percent of staff and operators in the industry are vaccinated against the pandemic.

Mr. MUPWAYA said through the vaccination, the sector will be able to thrive through the anticipated fourth wave.

And Zambia Tourism Agency -ZTA- Acting Chief Executive Officer CHAVUNGA LUNGU said there is need for the various stakeholders in the tourism value chain to get vaccinated so that they can protect themselves from Covid 19.

Meanwhile Zambia National Public Health Institute Director VICTOR MUKONKA urged citizens to adhere to the five golden rules so that even as the new variant is detected in the country, it will not vigorously spread.
