RAMAPHOSA CALLS FOR CALM

(BBC) South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for calm following violent protests linked to the imprisonment of the former president Jacob Zuma.

Twenty-five lorries were torched and shops were looted on Friday night in Kwa Zulu Natal Province.

Major roads were blocked with burning barricades. The police said at least 26 people were arrested.

The protests started a day after Mr Zuma began serving a 15 month jail sentence for contempt of court in connection with a corruption investigation.

The Jacob Zuma Foundation has refused to condemn the violence.

A spokesman said it was “righteous anger” provoked by unfair court decisions.
