QUIT ABUSING WOMEN,CHILDREN-FIRST LADY

By Chimangeni Banda-First Lady Esther Lungu has warned Zambian men to desist from abusing children and engaging in gender-based violence with impunity.Mrs Lungu urged Zambian men to exercise maximum self-control against all forms of child abuse and gender-based violence.ZANIS reports that Mrs Lungu said committing such vices compromises and lowers men’s standing in society.She reminded men of their critical role in society of providing for their families and make the home environment safe, friendly and peaceful to support the development of children into peaceful and productive citizens.Mrs Lungu said this when she officiated at the commemoration of the international day of the African Child held at Chibwika primary school grounds in Mwinilunga District.The First Lady further cautioned parents and guardians against subjecting children to frustrating childhood experiences.And Mrs Lungu praised Chief Chibwika and his people for using the Day of the African Child to campaign against child marriages and teenage pregnancies in the chiefdom.Mrs Lungu also commended World Vision for investing heavily in school infrastructure development and water and sanitation in Mwinilunga District especially in chief Chibwika’s chiefdomThe Day of the African Child is celebrated in remembrance to children killed during the Soweto uprising in 1976 in South Africa who were protesting poor quality of education.The First Lady donated various food items and educational materials to the pupils.And North Western Province Permanent Secretary Willie’s Manjimela thanked World Vision Zambia and other cooperating partners for implementing development programmes in the chiefdoms to help transform lives and Livelihoods.And World Vision Zambia National Director John Hasse said his organisation is committed to helping end child marriages in Mwinilunga District and the country.Mr Hasse World Vision Zambia has invested over 8 million U.S dollars and will spend an additional 3 million dollars by 2024 to improve lives of children in Chief Chibwika’s chiefdom.In his vote of thanks, chief Chibwika commended the First Lady for the difference she’s making in people’s lives.The traditional leader also praised government and World Vision Zambia for supporting the development of the chiefdom and raising awareness on children’s rights.
