The Zambia Law Development Commission has concluded the review of the public order act and will now hand over the draft Amendment Bill to the ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security.

The Public Gathering Bill seeks to repeal and replace the controversial Public Order Act which has been cited in the past for giving too much power to the Police to stifle freedoms.

Law Development Commission Acting Director MWIBA MWENDA says the commission is scheduled to hand over both the Public Gathering Bill and the report to the Minister on Monday next week for onward action by the authorities.

Mr. MWENDA says during the review period, the commission set up a Technical Committee which led the process.

Over 4 hundred calls for submissions were sent to various stakeholders who included civil society organisations, individuals and government departments.

Mr. MWENDA told ZNBC news that a desk review to look at what is provided for in the Zambian constitution and international statutes on human rights and fundamental freedoms was also conducted.
