Prosecutors urged to uphold professionalism

By Justine Akakulubelwa

Southern Province Minister, CORNELIUS MWEETWA, says there is need for prosecutors to uphold professionalism in their work, if the fight against corruption is to be won.

Mr. MWEETWA, who represented Vice President, MUTALE NALUMANGO, at the close of the National Prosecutors Conference, said the government is concerned that some cases on corruption are lost because of the unprofessional conduct of some prosecutors.

He said some prosecutors have been hastily and questionably taking financial crime cases before court without thorough evidence thereby gifting the suspects with acquittals.

Mr. MWEETWA however assured the prosecutors that Government will not victimise any prosecutor in the execution of their duties.

Meanwhile, Mr. MWEETWA called for the harmonisation of salaries for prosecutors under the National Prosecution Authority -NPA.

Speaking at the same event, last evening, Director of Public Prosecutions –DPP- GILBERT PHIRI, said the prosecutorial landscape in the country is changing, and that there will be a drastic reduction in opportunities for criminals to set safety nets around prosecutors.

Mr. PHIRI said there will also be an improvement in the management of seized and forfeited assets through the creation of legislative innovations.
