POLICE, MEDIA STRENGTHEN RELATIONS

Kitwe mayor MPASA MWAYA has called on Journalists and the Zambia Police Service to strengthen their working relations to enhance press freedom and expand on democracy in the country.

Ms. MWAYA was speaking in Kitwe during the joint Copperbelt police-media dialogue forum organized by Bloggers of Zambia and Zambia Police Service, with support from the Federal Foreign Office of the government of Germany.

She said the work of the police has an effect on journalistic work, hence the need for journalists and the police to understand and respect each other’s work.

And Kitwe District Police Officer Commanding SIKAKENA LUBINDA said police are committed to protecting journalists and ensuring their safety and security during their work.

Participants to the dialogue forum were drawn from Kitwe, Kalulushi, Chingola, Luanshya, Ndola, Mufulira districts and Kamfinsa School of Public Order Maintenance.

And a communiqué released after deliberations at the police-media dialogue, which involved participants from Kitwe Press Club, Ndola Press Association and Zambia Police Service, delegates resolved that police and journalists on the copperbelt province should enhance their communication to improve sharing and access to information for journalistic work.

The dialogue forum also resolved that police and media need to develop an understanding of each other’s individual roles, duties and responsibilities to enhance their working relations to contribute to a stronger democracy.

The meeting also recommended the initiation of regular interactive meetings between journalists and police with the aim of reducing all forms of physical and other forms of confrontations and misunderstandings between the two parties.
