Police Bust Mealie Meal ‘Smuggling’ Bid

Police in Kitwe have intercepted a truck laden with over 700 25kilogrammes bags of mealie-meal destined for Congo DR using an illegal route at an area called Central A farm about 50km across Kafue river.A hunt for two other trucks is still underway and two people, a driver and a lorry boy have been arrested in connection with the syndicate that includes some Congolese nationals who are at large.Alert Community Crime Prevention Unit -CCPU- in the area blocked the route with three trucks around 03: 00 hours this morning and alerted riverside police who quickly rushed to the scene.Police have also summoned a council police officer at Bulangililo bridge who is believed to have aided the passage of the trucks.The Council officer was found with a two hundred kwacha an amount the driver confessed to have given the official.Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo recently directed police on the Copperbelt to curb the smuggling of mealie meal that he said had caused the escalating prices of the commodity.
