By Chanesa Tembo-Zambian seed company -ZAMSEED has advised farmers to consider planting early and medium maturing seed when rains begin following a dry spell that has rocked some parts of the country the past few weeks.

ZAMSEED Country Marketing Manager ZACK MUSONDA says farmers should consider planting legumes such as beans, cowpeas and soybeans as soon as the rains start.

And the Zambia Meteorological Department has assured farmers that the whole country will start experiencing rains beginning December 15th after the projected 10 day dry spell.

Department Meteorological Officer MIKA NAMUKOKO says farmers should patiently wait because the country will experience normal rains as projected earlier despite the dry spell.

Mrs. NAMUKOKO has however advised farmers to consider planting early and medium maturing seeds.

She says the MET Department will continue to update the country on this season’s rainfall pattern so that citizens can be well informed.

And Agriculture Minister REUBEN MTOLO says farmers under the Farmer Input Support Programme -FISP- can still get support from their insurance companies should their inputs be destroyed by the dry spell.

Mr. MTOLO has advised farmers under FISP especially those who planted early to engage their respective insurance companies for support.

He has further urged the media to extensively spread out messages concerning the dry spell so that farmers do not lose inputs.
