Over 1000 miners issued with redundancy notices

Luanshya Copper Mines has terminated contracts for three major contractors at Baluba Mine who in turn have issued redundancy notices to over One thousand miners on the Copperbelt.

National Union of Miners and Allied Workers President SAUL SIMUJIKA has disclosed that about seven hundred miners at JCHX, a major contractor at Baluba have received notices of termination of employment.

Mr. SIMUJIKA has further disclosed that 500 more workers for two contractors engaged by Luanshya Copper Mine at Baluba Mine have also notified workers on their intentions to cut jobs by January 15th, 2023.

The NUMAW President who was speaking during a meeting with the Mines minister PAUL KABUSWE at Katilungu House in Kitwe wondered where Luanshya Copper Mine intends to place their 500 direct employees at Baluba Mine.

Meanwhile, United Mine Workers Union of Zambia President WISDOM NGWIRA disclosed that some major contractors at Mopani Copper Mines in Kitwe have also fired a number of workers due to lack of payments by the mining giant.

Earlier, Mine Workers Union of Zambia President JOSEPH CHEWE pleaded with the Government to revive operations at Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines.

But Mr. KABUSWE assured the unions that there will be no job losses at Baluba Mine.

Mr. KABUSWE told the meeting that he was given a assurance by Luanshya Copper Mines management that no worker will be fired at the Mine.
