By Ruth Chayinda

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has called on opposition political parties to work with Government to unite the country.

President HICHILEMA says opposition political parties are partners in development and should work to enhance democracy in the country.

He says opposition leaders, who joined him for the consecration of the Auxiliary Bishop  of Chipata  Diocese GABRIEL PHIRI are appreciated.

President HICHILEMA says he hopes to see such co-existence to be a permanent feature.

The President congratulated Bishop PHIRI for taking up the new role and assured him that Government will continue working with the church to improve people’s livelihoods.

He said the church is not in competition with government but compliments each other in national development.

And Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops -ZCCB- President IGNATIUS CHAMA  said he is hopeful that Government and the Catholic church will continue to embrace a partnership that has honest dialogue and accepts short comings.

Archbishop CHAMA said the Catholic Church will continue to supplement Government’s efforts in various sectors, among them health, education and development projects.

He also counselled opposition political parties that were  present to witness the consecration of Bishop PHIRI to play their part in ensuring that the country continues on a path of democracy and good governance.

Chipata Diocese Bishop GEORGE LUNGU commended President HICHILEMA for being a part of the ceremony saying it shows the relevance he places on the role bishops and the church play in the Governance system.

Meanwhile, the Auxiliary Bishop PHIRI thanked Government, traditional leaders and various stakeholders for witnessing his consecration.
