Office of the Public Protector to open offices in five provinces-Sokoni

The Office of the Public Protector will soon open offices in 5 Provinces to look into the welfare and protection of vulnerable persons including people living with different kinds of disabilities .

Public Protector CAROLINE SOKONI says the offices will be user friendly and accessible to persons living with disabilities .

Ms SOKONI said this during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between the office of the Public Protector and the Disability Rights Watch.

The MOU is meant to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities and also strengthen case referral systems to help in capacity building for the well-being of persons with disabilities.

Meanwhile, Disability Rights Watch Board Chairperson JOSEPH MUSANJE says nearly 2 million Zambians have one form of disability or another representing close to 10 percent of the population.

Mr MUSANJE said this in a speech delivered on his behalf by Disability Rights Watch Board Vice Chairperson GRACE NKUWA.

Mr. MUNSANJE said he is elated to see how Zambia has made considerable efforts to strengthen rights of persons with disabilities with the ratification of the United Convention on their rights.

And Disability Rights Watch Board Chairperson Director WAMUNDILA WALIUA says he is hopeful that the MOU will help promote the mental and intellectual disabilities when it comes to their legal capacity and decision making procedures.
