Number of children on the streets rises – MWAMBA

By Ruth Chayinda

Community Development and Social Services Minister, DOREEN MWAMBA says the country has seen a rapid increase in the number of children living on the streets.

Mrs. MWAMBA says following a survey conducted by the Ministry, over 2,000 children across the country are living on the streets with boys standing at 1,478 while girls account for 571.

She however says government has been responding to the influx by ensuring that it provides rehabilitation and empowerment to street children so that they move out of the streets.

Mrs. MWAMBA said this when she led the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General NAJAT MAALLA, on a tour of the Chikumbi Children’s Home in Chibombo.

And Dr. MAALLA said there is need to strengthen collaborations to end violence against children in Zambia.

She said during her visit to Zambia, she will have first hand engagement with various stakeholders on efforts to end violence and strengthen the child protection system.

And UNICEF Country Representative, PENELOPE CAMPBELL said the UN Agency will continue to support and push for children’s rights in Zambia.
