Nkombo warns no show road contractors

Local Government and Rural Development Minister GARY NKOMBO says road contracts during the Patriotic Front government were a preserve of its party cadres.

Mr. NKOMBO also says the previous government over contracted about 13 billion kwacha for rehabilitation of feeder roads, against a budgetary allocation of three point five billion kwacha.

He says the PF government committed to road works and gave out contracts to cadres who did not perform any works on their contracts.

The Minister says when he inherited office, he found out that the Ministry was owing, 3-billion kwacha in certified works and most contracts were given for four years.

Mr. NKOMBO says most of these political cadres have not moved on site and the roads have not been attended to despite government paying them.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Mufulira District Commissioner SABOI KABEKA, Mr. NKOMBO said his Ministry was used for political expedience by the PF.

Mr. NKOMBO has threatened that all contractors who have not done much work will have their contracts terminated.

And in Lufwanyama, Mr. NKOMBO took to task Choice Build Construction Company which has only rehabilitated 14 out of the 1-hundred and 10 kilometers of the Lumpuma Road.

Meanwhile, residents of Lufwanyama have complained that the contractor has not been on site for a long time and only showed up a day before the Minister was scheduled to check on the works.

And Lufwanyama Town Council Chairperson ANNIE KAPANDULA assured the residents that works will be expedited.

Ms. KAPANDULA said government will do everything possible to ensure works on the road are done.

But Choice Build Site Engineer KENAZ MUFUNGWA said his company has been on site for eight months and only worked on 14 out of the 1-hundred and 10 kilometers of the Lumpuma Road.

Mr. MUFUNGWA told the Minister that most of the time was spent on replacing culverts.
