NAKONDE RABIES BREAKS OUT CLAIMS 1 LIFE

(NAIS)One person has died of rabies following an outbreak of the disease in  Nakonde district of Muchinga province.

The victim succumbed to the disease after being bitten by an infected dog two months ago.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in the province says the declaration of the outbreak is in accordance with the Animal Health Act number 27 of 2010.

In a statement issued to ZANIS, Veterinary Department Director, Swithine Kabilika has directed authorities in Nakonde to immediately enforce control measures.

Dr. Kabilika said the measures include vaccinating all dogs and confining them.

He has further warned that all stray dogs will be destroyed and the owners prosecuted.

Meanwhile, Provincial Veterinary Officer, Wilson Katumbi has appealed to authorities in all districts in Muchinga province, to enforce rabies preventive measures.
