MWEETWA HAILS ZIM-ZAM TIE

By Mike Munkombwe:

Southern Province Minister Cornelius Mweetwa says the joint effort between the Zimbabwe and Zambia in the rehabilitation of the Kariba dam wall signifies the strong resolve to ensure increased power generation for the benefit of the entire SADC region.

Mr Mweetwa says increased power generation can only be guaranteed if there is proper infrastructure to support the activities of the power utilities of the two countries.

He says the on-going rehabilitation of the Kariba dam wall is set to provide sustainability in electricity supply in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Mr Mweetwa was speaking in Siavonga when he called on Zambezi River Authority -ZRA- Chief Executive Officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa.

Mr Munodawafa said during the presentation to the Minister that the rehabilitation works which are funded by the European Union and the African Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Swedish government are expected to be completed in 2024.

He said the works are meant to reinforce the walls of the Kariba dam to prevent any catastrophe as a result of a weakened dam wall.

Mr. Munodawafa disclosed that the high-tech works being done on the dam wall are the first of their kind in Africa.
