Local Government and Rural Development Minister GARY NKOMBO says all the 900 traders at LUSAKA’s Munyaule market were engaged and offered alternative trading spaces before the demolition.

Mr. NKOMBO told Journalists at a media briefing in Lusaka today that the traders were notified of the demolition through notices and the latest one was issued on January 17, 2024 instructing them to relocate to designated places by February 29, 2024.

He said 200 traders that had initially been offered temporary trading spaces at Munyaule market by the Council will be accommodated at Simon Mwewa Lane Market.

Mr. NKOMBO said the remaining 700 traders that were trading at Munyaule market have been given offer letters to re-occupy the modern market that will be constructed.

He said there is currently no court order restraining the government from taking the action that was executed.

Mr. NKOMBO said the Lusaka City Council resolved to lease out Munyaule market during a full Council meeting on June, 28, 2019.

And Mr. NKOMBO said some traders have already been accommodated along Lumumba Road just before the main Lumumba market while 120 were taken to City market.
