MTOLO: LET’S PROMOTE CONSERVATION FARMING

(NAIS) Agriculture Minister REUBEN MTOLO has challenged stakeholders in the agricultural sector to step up efforts in promoting conservation agriculture in a bid to mitigate the effects of climate change and the increasing cost of farming inputs.

Speaking during the Conservation Agriculture Regional Working Group Meeting for 2022 attended by 10 African Countries, Mr MTOLO explained that conservation agriculture is considered the solution to the increased cost of farming inputs.

He said the growth of the agricultural sector has been constrained by a number of factors including climate change and the increased prices of farming inputs such as fertilizer.

The Agriculture Minister said Zambia has to produce enough food from the limited land available to feed the ever increasing population, hence the need to enhance production and productivity in a more sustainable manner.

Mr MTOLO said government will continue to support all interventions aimed at promoting conservation agriculture, and that his ministry is enhancing efforts to increase the number of farmers and land under conservation agriculture.

And Food and Agriculture Organisation -FAO- Country Representative SUZE FILIPPINI said it is important to roll out conservation agriculture to Smallholder farmers throughout the region.

Ms FILIPPINI has urged all stakeholders in agriculture to work together to scale up proven alternatives, innovative and transformative production approaches.
