By Christopher Miti

An edible oil processing company has called on the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises to reach out to companies with innovative products and help them improve their operations.

Midlands ZAM-MAL Petroleum Chief Executive Officer CHARLES MVULA says engaging SMEs with innovative ideas and products is key to job creation and improving the living standards of citizens.

Mr. MVULA says his company which also has presence in Malawi has started producing cooking oil from maize as the major raw material.

He says the petroleum company has since started empowering local farmers by buying a 50 kilogram bag of maize at 200 kwacha.

Speaking during the launch of the Kukaya cooking oil project in Chipata, Mr. MVULA also pledged to inject part of the profits from the project into the community through various Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

And Midlands Operations Manager ALEXANDER LUNGU said the company will introduce an out-grower scheme targeting 10-thousand farmers in its operational areas.

He said value addition is key for private sector growth which contributes to economic development, job creation and ending poverty.
