MINE UNION WANTS BETTER CONDITIONS FOR WORKERS

By Hector Simfukwe

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia says the effectiveness of the labour movement should be seen in its member’s ability to have better jobs and good conditions of service.

MUZ President JOSEPH CHEWE says this is why union leaders should work hard to protect the interests of their members.

He said this during the MUZ strategic plan meeting in Kitwe.

Meanwhile, Mr CHEWE bemoaned the continued trend of turning permanent jobs into contract jobs in the mining sector.

He said this trend should not be allowed to continue.

Mr CHEWE also thanked the government and the Labour Commissioner for protecting the miners’ interests.

And Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Programme Manager KATHY SHORT said her organization will continue giving technical support to mines union in the country.
