MEDICAL WASTE CLEARED

By Lucky Phiri:

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency ZEMA and Lusaka City Council have moved in to clear a pile of medical waste dumped at the old Chilenje Cemetery.

This is after some residents complained that the medical waste which includes strings , used gloves and face masks , needles and blood tubes were posing a health risk to the community.

And ZEMA Acting Corporate Affairs Manager Friday Phiri says the exercise in line with the agency’s mandate to protect the environment against hazardous waste.

Mr. Phiri says the Agency is working with other stakeholders to establish the people behind the illegal dumping of medical waste at the graveyard.

He says those that will be found wanting for the illegal disposal of medical waste at the cemetery will be dealt with accordingly.

And Lusaka City Council Solid waste and Paste Control Cleansing Manager Kachikoti Banda says the local authority will soon move in to clear the overgrown vegetation at the graveyard.
