Marketeers face eviction from Chilenje Market

Maiko ZuluSome Marketeers at Chilenje market are facing eviction, Independent Parliamentary candidate Maiko Zulu has revealed.

And Zulu a Musician popularly known as St Michael now running for a political office has since called on President Lungu to follow this issue.

Zulu disclosed this on Tuesday after his visit to the market during his campaign trail ahead of next week’s election.

He said:

Today I had nshima with kalembula for lunch courtesy of bana Mpundu, a charcoal trader at Chilenje Market. This woman is one of the many marketeers who are facing eviction from the market following the sale of their trading spaces without regard and in questionable circumstances allegedly with the help of someone in authority. The land in question has allegedly been shared among just 12 people.
I humbly request the investigative authorities and indeed our father the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu to seriously look into this matter as it relates to several families being thrown on the streets. Some of our grand mothers have been trading at this market for over 20 years and it is their only source of livelihood.
Similar sales of land have been conducted dubiously within Kabwata Constituency without regard and communication with the affected people.
In as much as development and modernisation are welcome, taking people by surprise is the most unfair way of governing one’s constituents as the case is here where the marketeers woke up to a rude shock when people came to demarcate the land.
In as much as I enjoyed the nshima, I can’t help thinking of the uncertainty and the agony that the affected families are going through.
