MALUPENGA SPEAKS TO BETTER PAY FOR JOURNALISTS

By Ruth Chayinda

Information Permanent Secretary AMOS MALUPENGA has urged managements at media houses to improve conditions of service for journalists so that they are not tempted unnecessarily.

Mr. MALUPENGA says once journalists are well paid, they will not compromise their ethics but instead uphold professionalism and integrity.

He says the ministry will engage managements at various media houses on the low wages being provided to some media personnel.

The PS said this during a program dubbed ‘Let the people talk’ where he was joined by MISA Zambia program Manager JANE CHIRWA ahead of Press Freedom Day commemorations.

Mr. MALUPENGA also advised media houses to avoid being aligned to political parties but provide favorable coverage to all.

And Mr. MALUPENGA has urged the public to desist from carrying out blanket condemnation against ZNBC, saying the national broadcaster operates within its mandate.

He however said if the public is aggrieved by the conduct of the national broadcaster because they are not operating within their mandate, they have the right to follow procedure by engaging ZNBC management, and further, IBA if not satisfied.

And Ms. CHIRWA disclosed that the MISA is in discussions with the ministry of Labour to come up with a minimum wage for journalists.

She also said media houses should always uphold their allegiance to the public by giving them truthful, factual and accurate information.
