Lunda, Luvale clash

By Brian Mwale

Government has dispatched security officers to Zambezi District following violent conflict between the Lunda and Luvale people which left many people injured.

The fight arose over an area in the East Bank, where young boys who have come of age and the Makishi emerge from to cross the river in preparation for this weekend’s Likumbi Lya Mize Traditional Ceremony of the Luvale people of Senior Chief NDUNGU’s area.

Local Government and Rural Development Minister GARY NKOMBO says his office and Home Affairs and Internal Security minster JACK MWIIMBU are engaging Senior Chief CHINYAMA of the Luvale people and Senior Chief ISHINDI of the Lunda People to pacify the situation.

Mr. NKOMBO told ZNBC News that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has committed to meet the affected Chiefs and other concerned stakeholders immediately after the Likumbi Lya Mize traditional ceremony.

He said Article 165 of the Zambian Constitution disallows government to interfere or exert any influence on succession of Chiefs but allows affected parties who are owners of customs and cultures to resolve differences.
