Low pre-packaging standards worry govt

Patricia Banda-Government has directed the Zambia Metrology Agency -ZMA- to intensify its compliance inspections of mealie-meal and other pre-packaged commodities countrywide.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister CHIPOKA MULENGA says this is because he has observed the growing trend in non- compliance in mealie meal and grain meal related products on the market.

Mr. MULENGA was speaking at the launch of the Millers Seminar aimed at educating the manufacturing industry to comply with required packaging standards.

This was in a speech read for on his behalf by his Permanent Secretary JOHN MULONGOTI.

Mr. MULENGA further instructed the ZMA to extend its regulations to other sectors and sub-sectors.

And ZMA Acting Director FREDRICK HAMUTUNDA said the agency has held a seminar to help transfer knowledge on requirements and applicable regulations and also to address the concerns of milling companies.

Meanwhile, Millers Association of Zambia President ANDREW CHINTALA said his members will remain committed to enhancing food security by providing quality, accessible and affordable food to the nation.
