LAZ Ushers In New Leadership

By Justine Akakulubelwa

LUNGISANI ZULU has been elected as the new Law Association of Zambia -LAZ- President, taking over from ABYUDI SHONGA.

The results announced in the early hours of today, put Mr. ZULU ahead of his two competitors; SOKWANI CHILEMBO and GREGORY GORNHILL.

And NGOSA MULENGA-SIMACHELA  has scooped the position of LAZ Vice President.

Chief Justice MUMBA MALILA, who was the guest of honour at the LAZ Gala, has appealed to the new LAZ Council to ensure the issue of law reforms is taken seriously.

Dr. MALILA says he is hopeful the Law Reform Committee of LAZ will put more effort to ensure the country addresses the many lacunas in the Statute books.

He has also encouraged the new LAZ Council to work towards consolidating the relationship between the judiciary and the association.

And, Mr. ZULU pledged to continue building on the gains the outgoing council has left.

Mr. ZULU also appealed to the members of LAZ to reposition the legal profession to satisfy the increasing demand from the public.

He has thanked the outgoing president for stabilising the Association.

Meanwhile, Outgoing and immediate-past President ABYUDI SHONGA has cautioned the new council to resist being used by outside forces for political and other expedience.

Mr. SHONGA said he leaves behind an improved version of LAZ whose profile has been magnified over the last two years.

Meanwhile, Southern Province Minister CORNELIUS MWEETWA has appealed to LAZ to spearhead a campaign to encourage women and increase their numbers in decision making positions.

And the LAZ Council members comprise BRIAN MBILIMA, ARNOLD KALUBA, MELODY MAYAKA, WOMBA SILUMBU, DANIEL LIBATI, VALERIE KAWANG, ZIYA ALIKIPO, EDWINA MAZUNDA, KEVIN MWEEMBA, MARTHA KASHALA, TUNDO CHIBELEKA and YOSA GRANDSON YOSA.
