Government has called on the private sector to participate in programmes aimed at providing electricity to people in rural areas across the country.

Energy Minister Peter Kapala says government remains committed to accelerate access to electricity especially for rural Zambia.

Mr. Kapala was speaking during the Rural  Electrification Authority private sector meeting, under the theme promoting private partnerships to unlock the investment potential in rural electrification in Lusaka today.

He said the meeting is timely as it will help bridge the gap between private players within the energy sector in providing reliable energy sources to all people in rural areas.

Mr. Kapala said private sector investment in the energy sector has potential to create employment and grow the economy.

He further said government will continue to remain open to allow more investment In the energy sector.

Meanwhile, Rural Electrification Authority -REA- Chief Executive officer Linus Chanda  disclosed that over 8 point 1 percent rural communities have access to electricity hence the call to private sector to come on board.
