KABWE TASKS DCS TO RELOCATE PEOPLE IN FLOOD-PRONE AREAS

Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- National Coordinator, Chanda Kabwe has appealed to people living in flood-prone areas to immediately start relocating before worse floods hit the nation.

Mr. Kabwe has since advised all District Commissioners to collaborate with councilors and traditional leaders in explaining the benefits of early relocation.

He has also advised the general public to be careful when crossing bridges whose life span has expired, saying government has taken note of such infrastructure and will soon start working on them.

In a statement to ZANIS in Chinsali today, Mr. Kabwe said people should avoid being found in places that are high risk to rain calamities to avoid deaths.

And Chinsali District Commissioner, Mary Chifuna said there is need to mount a massive campaign on devastating effects of living in flood-prone areas so that people can relocate to upper land.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Nkula has tasked village leaders to ensure land is given to the people for new settlements, saying the issue requires political and concerted efforts from both victims and other stakeholders.

According to the Meteorological department’s recent report, torrential rains are likely to cause a lot of disasters in form of flash floods in prone areas, causing crop and general infrastructure damage.
