“INCREASED FOOD PRODUCTION KEY TO ENDING HUNDER”

By Hector Simfukwe

President Edgar Lungu says increased food production is key to ending hunger on the African continent.

President Lungu says it is unfortunate that the continent has continued recording low yields in food production despite having the capacity to produce more and feed the population.

He says increased productivity in the Agriculture sector will only be attained through the promotion of mechanised farming.

President Lungu said this when he addressed a high-level virtual dialogue meeting on Feeding Africa: leadership to scale up successful innovations.

He said government is committed to transforming the agriculture sector.

President Lungu said government has taken steps to improving the agriculture sector which has resulted in the country recording bumper harvests.

The President said government has also invested 45 million United Dollars in aqua culture value chains.

The Conference was attended by several African Heads of State and leaders of international organisations among others.

And speaking during the same Conference, President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi said the use of technology and smart agriculture will help to end poverty in Africa.

President Masisi also called for increased investment in the Agriculture sector.

And Rwandese President Paul Kagame called on African countries to invest in technologies that will help Africa produce more food.

He said Africa can produce its own food going by its good climatic conditions and availability of land.
